As a child, when I was in school, I studied about HIV and AIDS. But I never realized the seriousness of the disease at that time. To me, it was another interesting topic in which I scored good marks. But now that I am grown up and I am a mother, I know how painful it is to have a disease in you. I can also empathize with such patients because I realize the pain and trauma they go through in such stages. But again let’s not try and dramatize issues a lot. The purpose of this article is to create awareness about such a disease and not panic.
So, why do people create all this hype about HIV and AIDS? AIDS or rather Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome seems to be the last stage of HIV. If a person is HIV positive, then it means the HIV virus is present in the body. Basically it is a virus that affects the body’s immune system. Our immune system does the job of preventing the human body from acquiring any sort of diseases. When our immune system gets affected, even a small cold or fever is enough to get our body into serious trouble. In fact HIV is not a disease; it only paves way for the normal diseases to affect our body.
What are the possibilities of this disease spreading from one person to another? AIDS can spread through sexual contact with a HIV infected person. The disease can also spread through blood transfusions and when shared needles are used. But blood transfusions have become really rare in the U.S because all the blood that is donated to people is first properly screened for the presence of the virus and only then given to the other person. The third possibility is when a woman gets pregnant and if she is infected with the disease, there is a possibility of the child being infected as well. A nursing mother can also pass the disease when feeding the child with her breast milk. These are some of the methods by which it commonly spreads. But very rarely it could spread through accidental needle injuries, artificial insemination where the donor is already infected with the disease and when organ transplantation is carried out.
One thing to be remembered with organ transplantation is that the person who donates the organ will never come into direct contact with the people who receive them. In all these procedures, extreme precaution will be taken and only sterileneedles and instruments will be used. There will be a problem only in case the donor is infected with the virus. But these sorts of risks are very much avoided these days by proper screening procedures before organ transplantation is done. Even in today’s world where enough exposure and awareness of the disease is created, there are certainly some myths about AIDS.
To begin with, AIDS is not contacted to people when they touch each other or hug one another. It does not spread through mosquitoes. There is absolutely no possibility of the disease to get spread while participating in sports. When you touch an object used by a HIV infected person, there is no possibility of the disease getting spread as well. These people are just normal human beings like us and just like everyone else; they too have a place in this world where they needed to be treated with dignity and respect. More than anything else, they deserve our love and affection. Doctors should make it a point never to discourage such patients because doctors are their main ray of hope. When a person is infected with the disease he should be treated like a normal person.
I have personally seen my neighbors using help from security providers such as the ADT Home Security System to avoid their own family members infected with the disease. With a lot of advancements in technology doctors have been able to control the spreading of the disease to a very large extent. An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity. So live and let live!
